How to forward messages to Microsoft Teams in iOS

iOSBy Forward SMS TeamUpdated 10 min read

Forward SMS is a versatile iOS app that seamlessly forwards SMS to emails, Slack, Discord, URLs/APIs, or Telegram.

This guide will walk you through the steps required to forward SMS to a Microsoft Teams channel.

Prerequisites

In Microsoft Teams

Set up Teams webhook

  1. Create a channel

    Open Teams and create a channel where messages should be forwarded, or go to the team and channel you want to use.

  2. Open Workflows

    Select More options (•••) next to the channel name, then select Workflows.

  3. Pick the webhook template

    Search for and select the Send webhook alerts to a channel template.

  4. Configure the workflow

    Check that the right team and channel are selected. Changing the workflow name is optional. Select Save.

  5. Copy the webhook URL

    Once the workflow is created, copy the webhook link.

  6. Keep the URL handy

    Keep the webhook URL handy, as you'll use it in the app to set up the forwarding rule.

In the Forward SMS app

Set up rule in app

  1. Create a rule

    Create a rule.

  2. Choose Teams as the receiver

    Add a receiver and select Teams from the options.

  3. Paste the webhook URL

    In the URL section, enter the URL provided by Teams after creating the webhook.

  4. Send a test message

    Send a test message. This lets you verify that the rule is set up correctly and forwards SMS messages according to your criteria.

  5. Save the rule

    Save the rule.

  6. Check Teams for the message

    Your rule has been set up. Check the Teams app to make sure forwarded texts are received.

Or send to the channel by email

Every Teams channel can also receive email. Instead of a webhook, you can forward texts to the channel's email address.

  1. Get the channel email address

    In Teams, select More options (•••) next to the channel name, then select Get email address.

  2. Allow Forward SMS to send

    Select Advanced settings, choose Only email sent from these domains and add the domains below. Forward SMS sends emails from all of them, so add every one.

    Domains
    mailer1.forward-sms.com,
    mailer2.forward-sms.com,
    mailer3.forward-sms.com,
    mailer4.forward-sms.com,
    mailer5.forward-sms.com
  3. Copy the email address

    Copy the channel's email address shown at the top of the dialog, then select Save.

  4. Add an Email receiver

    In Forward SMS, add an Email receiver to your rule and paste the channel's email address. See how to forward to email for the full steps.

With a REST API receiver

Want more control over the message?

The Teams receiver posts the message in a fixed format. To choose the format and which properties are sent, add a REST API receiver instead, with the Teams webhook URL as the URL, the POST method, and this body:

Request body · JSON
{
  "type": "message",
  "attachments": [
    {
      "contentType": "application/vnd.microsoft.card.adaptive",
      "content": {
        "$schema": "http://adaptivecards.io/schemas/adaptive-card.json",
        "type": "AdaptiveCard",
        "version": "1.4",
        "body": [
          {
            "type": "TextBlock",
            "text": "{msg}",
            "wrap": true
          }
        ]
      }
    }
  ]
}

Forward SMS replaces {msg} with the message when it sends the request. You can change the text or add other properties.
